Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre, also known as Cachita or Our Lady of Charity, is the patron of Cuba and her feast day is September 8. The story says that three men were in a boat at sea off the coast of Cuba gathering salt to preserve meats for the miners. While they were out, the water became very rough as a storm approached. They survived the storm and the next morning they found a statue floating on a board. In spite of the rough seas, the statue was dry and it had an inscription that said “I am the Virgin of Charity”, so a shrine was built to honor the miraculous event.
